What's the Point of Independence Day if You Can't Even Set Off Fireworks?

My sister, who – God help her – still lives in Southern California, has just informed me that the “Burbank police will be on the lookout for illegal fireworks, celebratory gunfire”!

The implication, of course, being that all other kinds of gunfire can carry on as usual.

How on earth did we get here? When you live under a government that prohibits you from celebrating your freedom, you might well ask what it is you even have to celebrate.

But the fact is, we do have a lot of freedom. In spite of all that has been done over the past four years, in spite of the outright tyranny being waged against Americans by every tentacle of government everywhere, for much longer than four years. We do. We still are free in a great many ways, and we still have tools to protect that freedom.

It is time to put those tools to use.
