OMG PTSD reading this.

California...she's like that beautiful and amazing ex-wife (or ex-girlfriend) I loved dearly, and despite her imperfections, thought I would spend the rest of my life with her, but she turned out to be so incredibly toxic that I finally realized there was no fixing her; I had to rip her claws off my body and—with a certain degree of remorse—abruptly end the relationship. Fortunately, the new marriage I have is not only with a beautiful and amazing woman, she also respects me, gives me space to live my life, and the imperfections she does have are much more tolerable for me. I'll remember those good times with my ex and forever carry them in my heart, but I'm happily embracing a life that is so much better now, and the future sure looks a lot brighter.

As a former resident of CA (left in 2001), and a current resident of VA, I concur with this analogy.

Born, raised and living in what I considered to be Utopia until the age of 31 (leaving only because I married into the military), it breaks my heart to learn what has become of my home state under Gov Gruesome. I always dreamed of moving back there (San Diego, specifically) one day. Not now. And not until Gruesome is gone and much of the destructive legislation has been overturned.

Yes. It really is a beautiful place underneath the evil.

I miss the PLACE so much! It kills me the government has F'd up the experience of residing there.
