When I was very young, I believed that the world must be filled with wonderful and exciting people. People who cared about the same things I cared about, people who were passionate about their pursuits, who were electric to be around. I believed that all I had to do was go out into the world and these people would be easy to find.

But I was in for a rude shock. Yes, there are wonderful people out there—and many are wonderful in ways that I’d never expected. But what I found was that even among these people, very few were “my people”—people who shared my most fundamental values, and among whom I felt at home. The closest I came to finding “my people” for a very long time was, oddly, in Japan. Among the rest of the world, almost nobody I met shared my core values, or had a real passion for any of the things I considered important. I had friends, but what I craved more than anything else was community. I was starved for a community of like-minded people, among whom I felt “at home.”

In 1999, while I was working for The Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong, I decided to attend the Mises Institute’s week-long “Mises University.” I had heard about it before, but had never had the free time nor the burning desire to attend. What I found was something magnificent.

It was intellectually stimulating and intense, which I had expected. What I hadn’t anticipated was what it would be like to have in-depth conversations with people who already understood that the state was the problem, and were ready to discuss what comes after that recognition. I wasn’t ready for how positive and good humored everyone would be, how I would laugh until my stomach hurt with the guys from Detroit at lunch time, how I would spend hours in conversations that felt like minutes. I hadn’t anticipated what it would feel like to be “home.”

The space that Lew created when he founded the Mises Institute is more than just a physical place, and much more than just a “think tank.” He created a framework within which a culture based on shared values could emerge organically. And it has.

It is a place where you don’t need to self censor before speaking; if anyone takes issue with what you have to say, they will likely say so in a civilized manner, and a thoughtful discussion will ensue. It is a place where you can leave your laptop on a desk in the library and know—not believe, but know—that it will still be there when you come back. It is a place where God comes up in conversation and nobody snickers or sneers.

It is also a home for many intellectuals who might otherwise have found themselves homeless.

I haven’t told very many people this, and I don’t even know if Lew knows. But there was a time when my father was becoming depressed because he didn’t think anyone was reading what he wrote. He had written two books, and he wrote articles for at least one publication—but at one point, they stopped running them. After my first Mises University (yes, there were more), I suggested to my dad that he send some articles to Lew, and ask if he would want to run them on LewRockwell.com. He did, and Lew did, and LRC became my father’s intellectual home. By the time he passed away in 2019, my father had written around a hundred articles for LRC, as well as numerous blog posts. The Mises Institute re-published his first book, In Restraint of Trade, and went on to publish two more of his books. Much more meaningful to my dad though, was the connection to the many thousands of people who appreciated what he had to say. Even today, I frequently encounter people who tell me how much my father’s writing meant to them—in some cases, that it has changed their entire outlook on life.

That is all thanks to Lew. He quite literally changed my father’s life, and I will be forever in his debt for that.

I have watched over the years as Lew and the Mises Institute have stuck to their principles even when it has cost them financially to do so; I watched as LRC and the Institute were among a very small handful—even among purported libertarians—who spoke out against the Covid-era takeover of our lives; My niece and nephew have attended Mises University, and I hope that my son will too. But even more than that, I hope that my grandchildren, and their grandchildren, will have the opportunity to experience it. I want for the Mises Institute to continue being what it has been since its inception, long into the future, long after I am gone. I want to think that no matter how crazy and dysfunctional the world may become, the Mises Institute will always be there, a sanctuary for people like us.

All of this brings me to the words of Dr. Hans-Hermann Hoppe, from yesterday.

For those who do not know, Dr. Hoppe is the Mises Institute’s Distinguished Senior Fellow. He has been affiliated with the Institute for over forty years, and is the recipient of both the Institute’s Schlarbaum Prize, and its Rothbard Medal. Hoppe is the author of Democracy, the God that Failed, among other books. In the world of Austrian economics, and in the Mises Institute in particular, he is something of a “big deal.”

So when Hans-Hermann Hoppe has something to say about the Mises Institute, I am going to take it seriously.

Yesterday, he published on his own site an article revealing a serious problem with the way the Institute is being run. The article contains within it a letter that Dr. Hoppe and Dr. Guido Hulsmann—one of the Mises institute’s most brilliant scholars, a Senior Fellow with the Institute, and the author of Mises’ biography—wrote to Lew and the Board in August of last year, outlining the nature of this problem. A problem that, in their words “…has the potential to ruin the Institute.”

What is this problem? Briefly, as Hoppe and Hulsmann describe it: The way the Institute is currently organized, the president of the Institute—whoever that may be—is not able to act independently from the Board. The MI’s Academic Vice President, Joe Salerno, is also a permanent member of the Board of Directors. As such, say Hoppe and Hulsmann, “(e)ven though Joe is formally an employee of the Institute, in fact, materially, he is the Vice-Chairman and therefore the hierarchical superior of the President.”

“…Whenever Joe is in fundamental disagreement with the President over any issue that Joe considers important, he can bypass the chain of command and weigh in directly with the supreme authority (the Board and, especially, Lew). Hence, he is in a position to defy, challenge, and overcome virtually any sitting President.”

(As an aside, Hoppe believes, and has reason to believe, that “…control has been wrested away from (Lew), and other people now read and handle (his) mail.”)

The problem is not only theoretical: Over the past three years, the Institute has lost two presidents, most recently, Tom DiLorenzo. Donors were told that DiLorenzo had resigned, but this was not true. According to Hoppe, he had been put on “administrative leave”, and later fired. The Institute has been without a president for eight months now.

Because of the way the Mises Institute and its Board are intertwined, Hoppe and Hulsmann wrote in their August letter: “Eventually, it will become impossible to find candidates for the hot seat of the President. It will sow widening discord among our scholars. It will alienate our donors and all other people of good will who look at us from the outside as a beacon of freedom.”

If they are right—and I have no reason to believe they are not—then this is indeed a serious matter. Not because the Mises Institute is on the verge of collapse, it is not. It is not going to go under next week, or even next year. As Hoppe writes, “The MI sits on an endowment of more than $70M. Nonprofits almost never implode, and with this endowment the Institute can limp along for decades, almost regardless of what it does or doesn’t do.”

But it is clear that the current setup, as described in their August letter, is not sustainable. It does not make for a foundation upon which the institute can flourish long into the future. And I do not believe that Lew Rockwell built his life’s work with the intention that it simply “limp along” for a few decades after his own life was over. He did not dedicate his life to a project that would essentially die with him.

It seems that if nothing is done to correct an obvious design flaw in how the Institute is set up, it will mean an untimely end to the Mises Institute, and that will be an actual tragedy. But it is a tragedy that is entirely avoidable. Hoppe and Hulsmann outline three very simple solutions to the core problem. One of those solutions should be implemented immediately.

To make all of this much worse though, the two received absolutely no reply to their letter, sent last August.

For a letter written by two of the most distinguished scholars from the Mises Institute to go unacknowledged, to receive no reply, is absolutely shameful. It is not only a dishonor to Professors Hoppe and Hulsmann, it is a dishonor to all of us who have supported the Institute for years, and it is a dishonor to the great man who built it.

I know some of the people on the Board. I believe them to be good people. And I have to believe that they also care about the Institute—and all that it means—continuing to flourish long after they are gone. I hope that we will be hearing from them soon about this, and with a clear and well-articulated plan to correct what appears to be a fatal flaw in the structure of one of the most important institutions of our time.

We also discuss the meaning of “faith”, and address the question: “Do the means perhaps justify the ends?”

We even grumble a little about “kids these days.”

If you’ve been paying any attention at all to the release of (some of) the Epstein Files, you are likely feeling physically ill right now. For many of us, the information itself is not new. We’ve been listening to victims and witnesses speaking about these crimes for years now. But there is something about having it presented through official channels, something about seeing the emails and the other evidence directly, something about the matter-of-fact way in which it is all being shown to us that makes it all the more sickening.

A caveat, for those who say that the released documents “prove nothing.” Perhaps. But I think the Bad Cat says it best:

“the reason this dump was (rightly) so feared is that, even if adulterated, it’s enough volume to do real pattern analysis, a mosaic of 3 million things most of which could be dismissed on their own that, as a collective, form a picture that increasingly comes into focus.”

An awful lot of people are asking how it is that we got to this point. How could our entire system of governance become so corrupted that these sick, depraved, monsters were able to make their ways into positions of the highest power? And why did that system protect them, and not their victims?

As it turns out, these questions almost answer themselves.

I apologize in advance if I sound a little condescending, annoyed, or even enraged, as I try to explain how this works. It’s just that a small number of us, have been explaining this for a very long time and almost nobody has been listening. My hope is that now that the alleged crimes committed and enabled by those in power include literally eating babies, this might change. But given the near-religious fanaticism with which most Americans believe in the legitimacy and sanctity of the state, that hope is not great.

Still, here goes:

There can be no accountability with monopoly.

This lesson is drilled into econ. 101 students as part of mainstream education’s efforts to instill a fear of free markets. Yet the obvious corollary is ignored: If monopolies that arise from free competition (they don’t, but that’s another conversation) are dangerous because the monopolists are no longer accountable in any real sense to their customers—what should that tell us about monopolies that are created by force?

Most Americans don’t think about their political system in these terms. Most Americans believe—with a religious ferocity—that the fact of voting means we do control our politicians, and that everything they do is an expression of our will. That if “our” elected representatives end up doing horrible things, either to us or to others, it is all our own fault. That we just need to be better voters.

Most Americans do not understand the first thing about incentives—especially perverse ones; about the nature of the regulatory state; about how coercive systems protect themselves from accountability; or about the implications of being able to take other people’s money without their consent, and to create money out of thin air.

But you can bet there’s one group of people that understands all of this very well, and is eager to take advantage of it. That group consists of would-be criminals of every stripe, from thieves, murderers and rapists to extortionists and military adventurers.

These folks, the ones who have no compunction about violating other people’s rights, stealing their property, or even raping, torturing and killing other people… they are always on the lookout for opportunities that might allow them to commit their crimes undetected or un-prosecuted.

The institution of the state provides them with exactly this opportunity.

Separate rules for those inside this safe space.

It is easy to see that there are pockets of unaccountability within our system of governance, with examples such as the PREP Act that protects doctors and other health-care workers from liability from harm they may cause when providing “covered countermeasures”; the removal in 1986 of liability for harm for the manufacturers of vaccines; and the qualified immunity granted to police officers that prevent them from being prosecuted for committing acts that would send any of the rest of us to jail.

What may be less clear is how the entire system is itself a pocket of unaccountability. To illustrate what I mean, let’s take an imaginary (or not so imaginary) state governor. Let’s call him Governor Skippy.

Governor Skippy likes his governor’s mansion. He likes all the parties he gets to go to and the fancy friends he makes. He likes getting to hang out with movie stars, and he likes being on TV himself. He likes the thrill he gets from signing pieces of paper that make declarations about how all the people in his state get to live their lives.

If Governor Skippy wants to keep doing these things, he has to make his financial backers happy. So he signs pieces of paper saying that parents cannot choose which vaccines to give their children, or whether to vaccinate them at all. And his friends in the pharmaceutical companies send him lots of money. The massive—and completely unaccountable—regulatory infrastructure in Governor Skippy’s state makes it nearly impossible to do the controlled burns that are necessary to protect forests from being ravaged by uncontrollable fires. Governor Skippy also enacts laws to protect tiny little fish by dumping millions of gallons of fresh water into the ocean each year, instead of into reservoirs. This makes his environmental sponsors happy, and they keep sending Governor Skippy lots of money. He then goes on TV and acts sad when millions of acres of forests, homes, and businesses in his state burn to the ground.

Governor Skippy also does things like ordering churches to close down during a government-declared emergency, ordering the people in his state to stay indoors until he says they can come out, and demanding that they wear masks on their faces whenever he tells them to.

All of the above are clear violations of the Constitutional rights and/or trespasses against the property of the people living in Governor Skippy’s state. But Governor Skippy doesn’t care. Why? Because he knows that nothing bad will happen to him as a result of his violating people’s rights. Just like nothing bad will happen to him if half of his state burns to the ground because of his stupid policies. He is insulated from any real form of accountability for the results of his actions. All of his decisions are made in an accountability vacuum.

Of course, it is possible that someone might take Governor Skippy or his administration to court over one of these violations. It’s possible they might even win. But what happens then? Is Governor Skippy sent to prison? Of course not. If the court grants monetary awards to the victims of Governor Skippy’s policies, do those awards come out of Governor Skippy’s pockets? Of course not. If any of Governor Skippy’s disastrous public policies are shot down by the courts, he just skates away to enact new ones—in the full knowledge that he will never personally be held accountable for even one bit of the damage he does.

If any ordinary private citizens committed acts like these, or helped to destroy property on the scale of Governor Skippy, they would be tried in court and would likely serve prison sentences. At the very least, they would be on the hook for financial damages. But that is never even a possibility for those in power. It’s not how things are done.

It’s a great racket if you can get in on it.

Taxation and fiat money.

The icing on the cake is that the people who are victimized by Governor Skippy’s wanton acts of destruction are also forced to pay for them. But the craziest part of this story is that most of these people don’t even recognize this, or think that it matters.

They’ll go on bickering amongst each other about how they’re not voting the right people into office, while failing again and again to notice that no matter who is in office, those people use the money they’ve taken from us by force to do whatever it is they want to do, whether it is waging wars, funding phony education centers for their friends, or buying sex slaves.

And all the while, the folks who are having their money and wealth taken from them will scream until they are red in the face if you try to point out that they are being stolen from.

While most of your friends and family members do not understand even the basics of how this works, the folks who are the most interested in getting away with committing the most awful crimes understand very well how it works.

This is why most politicians laugh at Ron Paul when he speaks about our Constitutional rights as if he takes them seriously. It’s why most politicians will just snicker contemptuously if you bring up the topic of Constitutional limits on government power. The criminals in control know that it doesn’t matter. They know that there is nothing anyone can do to make them abide by the limits on their power as outlined in that document. They know that, in reality, there are no limits on their power.

This is the soil where demons flourish. And you’d better believe they know how to find it.

The environment that is generated by the monopoly state is by definition one of no accountability. This environment becomes fertile ground, not only for those who wish to wield power over others, but also for those who just want to commit crimes against them. For those who simply derive pleasure from raping, torturing, and killing other human beings. The institution of the state provides a safe space for individuals who wish to do these things and more, as long as they can make themselves useful to that state in some way.

This is how we get Caligula.

This is how we get Pol Pot.

This is how we get Epstein Island.

The worst people in the world understand very well how our system of governance works. You should too.

A couple of weeks ago, I was working on a piece that tangentially involved Graham Linehan and his battles with British law enforcement.

I was looking to provide reference links for some of the violent threats Linehan has received from trans activists. I’ve seen some of these threats when linehan has posted them, either on Twitter/X or here on Substack. So I am confident they exist. But when I went to look for them two weeks ago, they were gone.

All I have right now, other than my own recollections of these messages, is my conversation with Grok on the topic. Grok very helpfully tried to show me all the places where I might find these messages, but EVERY SINGLE LINK Grok sent me to had been scrubbed. I mean EVERY link. Including the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive. Including Parliament’s Hansard.

Of course I can understand why Linehan would pull down posts he had made about this, during or soon before an active court case. That’s not controversial. What IS controversial in my mind is how EVERY SINGLE MENTION of these threats has been scrubbed from every single place they once existed on the Internet. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like that before.

When I was nine or ten, I refused to switch over to Daylight Savings Time. My uncle had given me a watch, with glow-in-the-dark hands and numbers, and I wore it all the time – set to Standard Time, the whole year. If anyone ever asked me the time (they never did – I was nine or ten years old), I would tell them the time in Standard Time.

I only did it that one year, and I guess it didn’t accomplish anything, other than the satisfaction of having done it. But for me, the episode is a reminder that even kids understand that the whole Daylight Savings thing is a bunch of bull and ought to be resisted.

As an adult, I’ve grown accustomed to hearing other adults complain about Daylight Savings every time it comes around, and there are even legislative efforts to do away with it. But it occurs to me that even though the problem is a product of centralized control, the solution may not need to be centralized at all – not even at the state or local level.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

We already have multiple time zones, and people around the world are accustomed to dealing with them. We schedule calls and meetings with an awareness of the differing time zones of the participants, and most scheduling and online meeting software automatically adjusts times for individuals depending on where they are.

So throwing a few more time zones into the mix shouldn’t be a big deal.

What if everyone who no longer wishes to have their lives disrupted by the Daylight Savings Time farce simply declares a new time zone for themselves? For half of the year, that time zone would be the same as that of the region in which they live: Eastern Standard Time, Central Standard Time, etc. But when everyone else switches over to “Daylight Time”, everyone in this “new” (it’s actually quite old) zone would stay put. It would even be easy to name: Instead of “Eastern Daylight Time” or “Eastern Standard Time”, simply, “Eastern Permanent Standard Time”, etc.

Adjusting online scheduling will be easier than in-person scheduling, especially if people develop widgets to use with Zoom and other software, or – dare we hope? – these apps add the “new” time zones on their own. (Arizona and Hawaii already do not follow DST, and are always on permanent Standard Time. So the idea of incorporating new time zones that remain constant throughout the year is not especially radical.)

For in-person scheduling, the person choosing to be on “(Whatever region) Permanent Standard Time” could take it upon themselves to clarify which standard the person with whom they are scheduling uses, or to assume that the other person is following DST unless they indicate otherwise.

The big issue will be school and work starting times. For those who do not have flexibility in these areas, here is my suggestion: Go to bed and get up, at the same times (in “Permanent Standard Time”) throughout the year. Make these times early enough that when everyone else goes to the earlier schedule, you don’t have to disrupt your sleeping hours in order to get to work, or your kids to school, on time.Will implementing all of this entail some effort, hassle, disruption? Sure it will. Any kind of change involves some of all of this. The only relevant question is whether or not the change is worth the headache. And – here, as everywhere else – the only person qualified to make that judgement is the individual involved.

Those who are more aware of the impact of the circadian rhythms on our bodies, health, and wellbeing, may decide that it is absolutely worth a little extra hassle to avoid this disruption to our physical and energetic health. Those who are less aware, or less concerned, may decide it is not.

Early 21st-Century America is testament to the abject stupidity and deadliness of collective decision making. If we are to make things better in any of the areas of our lives that have been ravaged by government solutions, we must make every effort to bring decision making to the individual level. Daylight Savings Time is one area where we already possess the power to do just that.

I wrote this piece back in 2014—six years before the psychotic three-ring circus that was the California government’s response to the declared Covid-19 pandemic, and more than a decade before entirely preventable infernos ravaged some of the most valuable real estate in that state. The conversation I recount below, with Mr. Vismara, has to do with a very specific situation, but its implications regarding how the state operates are profoundly relevant well beyond this situation.

If I were to meet Mr. Vismara today, in 2025—after the abject dysfunction of his state’s government has been laid bare for the world to see, after the institution he worked for has been revealed to be, quite literally, burning that state to the ground—and if I were to pose to him the same question I posed below, I am quite certain that I would get the same response.

This is not a story about good or bad politicians. It is a story about the game of politics, the game of government itself. It is a story about the incentives generated by the political system, and about what that system is and is not capable of producing.

My daughter is developmentally disabled, and I am pursuing more child-centered therapies for her than the more widely recognized ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) method, so last fall I attended the DIR Floortime Conference on Floortime, a more play-based form of therapy. I wouldn’t have expected a conference on therapy for children with autism and related disorders to have much to say about politics, but in a country where the state’s tentacles reach into pretty much every aspect of human life, I should have known better.

As soon as I walked in, I was struck by two phrases: “parent choice” and “advocacy.” I was pretty sure that “parent choice” wasn’t going to mean what I hoped it would mean. So I asked someone who was wearing a big button with the phrase on it, and found that indeed, “Parent Choice” in this context simply refers to having the “choice” to force your insurance company to pay for alternative therapies in addition to the more established ABA method.

The issue revolves around a bill that was passed in 2011, SB 946, that mandates insurance coverage for developmental therapies to treat autism. However, either due to the way the bill was written or to the way it has been interpreted—and with much thanks to the ABA lobby—the insurance codes only apply to ABA therapy and not to alternatives. So now the DIR/Floortime lobby is rallying to change that. Of course, as someone who doesn’t believe in forcing other people to give me anything, I couldn’t support this kind of “choice,” so I just smiled and moved on.

As it turned out, the guest of honor at the conference’s gala dinner was Dr. Louis Vismara, senior policy consultant to California Senator Darrell Steinberg, the author of SB 946. Dr. Vismara spoke on the first morning of the conference, assuring parents that he would work diligently to get the problem fixed so that parents could also force their insurance companies to pay for Floortime therapy. There was much applause.

There were other concerns too. Some parents had felt the effects of state budget cuts and had to struggle to get the services they needed for their children. Dr. Vismara sympathized with these concerns and stressed the importance of being active in “advocating” for their children. He said that in the world of public policy, “you’re either at the table or you’re on the menu.”

He ended his talk by urging parents to get involved in the political process and to contact his office with any practical proposals. “If a specific problem is identified and there is a solution,” he said, then that solution has a “strong chance” of being implemented.

I had identified a specific problem and had a solution in mind. So at the end of his talk, I went up to him and asked him about it.

My husband and I are interested in starting a special-needs school based on Montessori or DIR principles. Nothing big—just a little school where our daughter and some of her peers could have an alternative to mainstream special education. But governments put a lot of roadblocks in the way of people doing things like this. Typically, you have to get permission from members of your city government, who decide whether there is a “need” for your school in your area. And it is no secret that California is one of the most onerous states for small businesses. My idea was to get the state and local governments to stop interfering with people coming up with their own solutions for special-needs families.

I asked Dr. Vismara whether Senator Steinberg would be interested in such a proposal—in working to get government out of the way of people creating solutions. He gave me one of those smiles reserved for people who really don’t understand how the game is played, who are neither at the table nor on the menu, but probably somewhere in the kitchen, sweeping up. He said, very definitely, “No.” When I asked him why, he said because “It’s a non-issue.”

That may seem like a strange thing to say if you know anything about the business environment in California. For years now, there has been an exodus of productivity from the state, which consistently ranks as the worst business environment in the country. According to the Los Angeles Times in 2011:

“California’s suffocating regulations have a lot to do with this discontent. A 2009 study by two California State University finance professors, Sanjay Varshney and Dennis Tootelian, estimated that regulation cost the state’s businesses $493 billion annually, or nearly $135,000 per company. Additionally, dense and complex land-use regulations have driven up housing construction costs in the state, giving residents a double whammy: a stagnant economy and unaffordable home prices, even since the real estate bubble burst.

“Taxes are another burden. According to the Tax Foundation, California imposes the nation’s second-heaviest tax burden on businesses, and finance officers of major companies recently rated the state’s overall tax environment the worst in the country, according to a poll in CFO magazine.

“On top of taxes and regulation, the state can also claim what may be America’s most expensive litigation environment for firms. The American Tort Reform Foundation recently named California one of the country’s five worst “judicial hellholes,” in part because state law allows trial lawyers to sue firms for minor violations of California’s complex labor and environmental regulations.”

(NOTE: As of fall 2025, the situation has only worsened. Just as in 2011, Chief Executive’s annual survey of CEOs from every state puts California at the bottom of the list of “best and worst states for business.” That publication is not alone. According to the California Policy Center,

“The Small Business Regulation Index, published by the Pacific Research Institute in 2015, ranks California as having the worst business climate for small firms. These findings were corroborated by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council in a 2019 study that put California in 49th place, and a 2021 study on the best and worst states for entrepreneurs conducted by the Cato Institute that placed California 48th among the 50 states.”

Others, such as the Orange County Register and Forbes, place California a little higher on the list. But nobody puts it anywhere near the top. And the exodus of both businesses and individuals has only intensified following the state’s Covid restrictions.)

But Dr. Vismara was right. In the world in which he operates, the concern about too much government interference in business and other activities is indeed a “non-issue.” Why? Because you don’t win at the game of government by reducing the powers of government.

If you are a candidate for public office, running against other candidates, you are going to gain more votes and more campaign contributions by giving your constituents what they want. And generally, what people want from their politicians is not “free and open markets” or “unhampered competition.” What they want is special favors for themselves—very often in forms that restrict their competition. Take a look at Senator Steinberg’s top donors and see if you can imagine any of them lobbying for a less restrictive business environment.

Granted, it is a stretch to refer to special-needs education and services as a “business” environment. Many of these services are provided either through local school districts or state-funded “regional centers” that provide various forms of therapy for families. Even families who send their children to private schools generally do so by suing their local school district to pay the inflated tuition of “non-public” special-ed schools.

This is where “advocating” comes in. Over and over, I heard about how important it was to “advocate” for your child’s needs. There was an entire panel of parents devoted to the topic. “Advocating” can mean many things. It can mean pressuring your local school district to provide the therapies, tools, or other forms of support your child needs to progress; it can mean fighting for legislative changes that force insurance companies to cover the therapy you want; it can mean insisting that your child be placed in a classroom where you feel he or she will benefit the most.

It’s funny, because I don’t have to “advocate” for the groceries I buy, or for clothes or books or furniture. I just go to the store and buy them. But the world of state-provided services is not a marketplace where goods and services are produced in response to consumer demand. It is a very different world, with very different consequences that reach far beyond issues of supply and demand.

One parent expressed these consequences very eloquently. He likened aggressive “advocating” for one’s child to having a LoJack for one’s car.

“A very determined thief is going to steal your car anyway,” he said. “It’s not going to prevent that. But if there are five other cars on the block that don’t have LoJack, most ordinary thieves are going to leave your car alone and go after one of the other cars.”

The parent admitted that this was a harsh way of looking at the world, but insisted that he didn’t really have a choice if he was going to pursue his child’s best interests. You have to be the squeaky wheel, he said. You have to insist—politely, of course—and keep insisting, if you’re going to be one of the few who get what they want. The school district has limited resources to spend on all of the families it serves, and if it is going to cut back anywhere, said the parent, he wants it to be on someone else’s child.

You’re either at the table—squeaking loudly—or you’re on the menu.

In the world of this parent, and the world of Dr. Vismara, that is indeed how things are: Eat or be eaten; be the squeaky wheel or go without. It is a zero-sum world where one person may get ahead only at the expense of another.

This stands in sharp contrast to the free market, where things are produced in response to consumer demand, and where the more people want something, the more of it gets produced. Dr. Vismara’s world creates no incentive to produce more goods and services in response to demand. Instead, it pits every consumer against every other consumer in a mad rush for—always—extremely limited resources. I call this environment, and the worldview it breeds, “dog-eat-dog statism.”

In a zero-sum game, yes, I’ll also fight to get my kids what they need at the expense of other people’s children. But what an ugly way to live. What an obscene game for us all to be playing, and what an obscene way for people to have to think about others. This may be the world of politicians, and it is unfortunately largely the world for parents of special-needs children. But it is not how I want my world to be.

And it doesn’t have to. I don’t want to teach my children that they can only gain by someone else losing; that they can only win at the expense of someone else; that other people are just obstacles to their own success. That is not my view of the world, and I don’t want it to be theirs.

The predictable response from those who support the existing system is that there are many people who cannot afford to pay for all of these services on their own. And of course that is true. But to leap from this truth to the conclusion that the only way to help these people is through the coercive and stifling mechanism of the state is to ignore a long history of mutual aid and other forms of voluntary support that people have long engaged in to support each other.

The real conflict is not, and should not be, between families of special-needs children vying for limited resources, nor is it between one method of therapy and another. The real conflict in the world of special needs services is between those who would allow markets for these services to function and flourish and those who would stifle them, keeping services unnecessarily scarce under the dominion of the state.

I’ve been avoiding writing this for twenty years. And every time I think about it and then don’t write it, I feel a little more guilty, because I know the information I have might help other women, other families, other babies. Now especially.

But I don’t write it, because just thinking about it—something I try to do every year at this time—takes me back there. Puts me back inside a nightmare that never really goes away. It’s not that it consumes me anymore, it doesn’t. The rest of my life has grown up around it, and given me space to be happy again. But it’s never gone away. Just thinking about it, or opening up that box, takes me right back there.

Right back to that hard table, in that thin hospital gown, looking up every few minutes at the big round clock on the wall. The image on the screen, the doctors’ words…

That sudden plunge, from the exhilaration of expecting a new baby, to this… is too much for a human being to handle. A part of my brain knew that. And I remember so clearly what it did to protect the rest of me. As the doctor was explaining to us that our son was “no longer living,” I experienced something happening inside of me. It was as if some executive function had stepped up and said to the rest of me “no, you don’t get this information yet. It’s too much for you. Not now.” And then that executive function, that part of my brain, whatever it is, pulled a lever that brought a wall down between itself and the rest of me. The parts that couldn’t yet handle what they were being told.

I think people call it “going into shock.” But it didn’t feel like shock. It felt cold and empty and numb.

Afterwards, I sat up on that same table, my arms outstretched for the nurse to take a blood sample.

“Just take it all,” I was thinking. “Take all of it.”

I do try to go back every year. I don’t always succeed.

Our baby, Miles, was 39 weeks old when he died from a cord accident in the womb, twenty years ago today. We later learned that my risk of stillbirth at that time—that is, the rate of full-term babies who die in the womb—was around one out of a hundred and fifteen. That number astonished me. I had thought that stillbirth was something that only happened in Victorian novels.

My risk, at that time, of having a baby with Downs Syndrome, was only slightly higher: about one in a hundred. Yet our OB/Gyn had strongly encouraged us to see a genetics counselor, and to have an amniocentesis done—even after I told her that the outcome wouldn’t make a difference because I would not abort a baby with Downs.

She actually tried to talk me out of my position, even saying—when I told her that most of the people I’d known with Downs Syndrome seemed pretty happy—that we “don’t know” if those with Downs are happy or have good lives. (It only later occurred to me that I wasn’t entirely sure if she was happy or had a good life.)

That should have been my first red flag.

That doctor never told us that my chances of having my baby die at 20 weeks or later were nearly as high as the chances of his having Downs. It was a stark and ugly lesson for me in where the priorities of the OB/Gyn profession lay.

Having spoken with more OB/Gyn doctors, and heard about others’ experiences, I now believe that the profession is dominated by eugenicists. My advice to new mothers: Find an OB/Gyn who is openly Christian. Even if you are not Christian yourself. You won’t regret it.

My other piece of advice: Learn about the work of Doctor Jason Collins, and plan to closely monitor your baby in the final months of pregnancy.

After we lost Miles, we learned about Dr. Collins’ work studying the causes of stillbirth and developing a protocol to prevent it. According to Dr. Collins’ research, a large percentage of stillbirth deaths are the result of some kind of problem with the cord: Either the cord wrapping around the baby’s neck, getting tied in a knot, becoming badly kinked, or getting under some other kind of pressure that impedes blood flow.

What Dr. Collins also found is that these problems can often be detected through extended monitoring. We worked with Dr. Collins for both of my later pregnancies to monitor for heart rate patterns that might indicate a problem, and were prepared to take action if there was one.

Now of course, in 2025, the kind of cord accident that killed our baby is not the only—nor, probably, even the most common—cause of stillbirth. Since the release in late 2020 of the Covid-19 mRNA “vaccines”, both stillbirths and miscarriages have skyrocketed among women who received these products.

Some surveillance data shows a 90% risk of miscarriage or stillbirth for women vaccinated during the first or second trimesters of their pregnancy both in the US and in the UK. And Naomi Wolf’s WarRoom/DailyClout team’s examination of Pfizer’s own data found that “… about 270 women got pregnant during the study. More than 230 of them were lost somehow to history. But of the 36 pregnant women whose outcomes were followed - 28 lost their babies.

Twenty years after losing Miles, I can honestly say that I no longer experience a powerful twinge of emotion—rage, mixed with envy, fear and I guess maybe even some empathy—whenever I see a pregnant woman. I no longer feel the need to run up to her and try to wipe the innocent smile off of her face, to yell at her that she has no idea how dangerous things are, how terribly badly things could still go.

I never did run up to pregnant women and say these things, of course, but perhaps I should have. Because their doctors sure won’t.

I don’t blame my doctor for our baby’s death. I don’t even blame the medical establishment and its “standards of care.” But it sure would have been nice to have known how high the risk of stillbirth was, and it would have been even nicer to have known about the work of Dr. Collins, to have some way of minimizing that risk.

We buried our son about a week after he died, in a beautiful cemetery in Brooklyn. As we held our ceremony, one of the men who had dug his grave, having seen the size of the coffin, stood and wept.

When I left a message with my doctor’s answering service, the operator who took the message started to cry on the phone.

When our baby’s aunt stopped screaming, she said “I hope he knows how much we loved him.”

It was many weeks before I felt able to go out in public again. I thought at the time that it was a big mistake for us to have given up on visible signs of mourning. We’ve lost (or thrown away) something important: Seeing your loss in the faces of other people helps to make it tangible, helps to confirm that it mattered. That your baby mattered.

When you suffer a loss like this, it shatters you, and even when you’re ready to venture out into the world again, it is as a weak shadow of your former self. All of time stands still now, and it is incomprehensible to you that others are still getting on with their lives, still rushing to meetings, talking about work, or food, or movies… as if any of that matters. Don’t they know?

With stillbirths and miscarriages rising to unbelievable levels in the past few years, I wonder how many of these flimsy shadows are walking among us now. The thought haunts me. We no longer wear veils, or even arm bands, to alert the world to our grief. If we did, I wonder what the world would look like now. I wonder if the rest of us could stand to see it.

A little over a week ago, I spoke with Kevin McKernan about the paper he co-authored with Jessica Rose and David Speicher, looking at DNA contamination, including SV40 promoter-enhancer sequences, in the Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccines. In that episode, I asked Kevin whether the paper is enough to demonstrate fraud on the part of the vaccine manufacturers. This is important, because if fraud can be shown, these companies lose their protection from legal liability.

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Jessica Rose about the paper. She explains what is needed to prove fraud, and why that is challenging, but also explains why there is a strong case for it. We also talk about the corrupt nature of the justice system, her own calculation of VAERS underreporting, and the preprint by Kevin McKernan that had just come out, showing “Hyperstimulatory N⁶-methyladenine (m6A) in residual SV40 plasmid DNA in mRNA vaccines“—and possibly more evidence of fraud.

We also talk a little about the meaning of life, and Jessica’s cat shows up near the end.

It is nearly impossible to make the argument for bioweapons as defensive weapons of war. Their very nature makes them more suited to indiscriminate assaults on entire populations, in which civilians are not merely “casualties of war,” but the intended targets.

The Biological Weapons Convention, which came into force in 1975, prohibits the development of biological agents as weapons. Yet numerous “high-security pathogen labs” exist around the world for the purpose of studying dangerous pathogens. As of March 2023, there were over 100 biosafety level 3 and 4 labs worldwide, with many more in the pipeline.

It is not possible to know the extent to which this ostensibly non-military research can or will be used for military purposes, but it defies credulity to imagine that the answer is “none of it.” Moreover, the very existence of such research creates population-level risks, due to the possibility of the accidental release of deadly pathogens.

Notably, the bulk of this research is funded by governments, raising an important question: In the absence of the state, would this kind of research—and in particular, research with the purpose of weaponizing pathogens—exist at all?

Of course, it is impossible to answer this question with certainty. But there are good reasons to believe that it would not, or that if such research did somehow spring from the marketplace, it would be at a vastly smaller scale than what we see today:

1. Military aggression is expensive.

This goes without saying. What is less widely acknowledged, however, is that markets characterized by voluntary transactions produce curbs on any expenses that are not justified by social demand.

What does this mean for national defense? It means that military spending that the public is not willing to pay for—voluntarily—doesn’t happen.

In free systems such as those described by Murray Rothbard, David Friedman, Robert Murphy, and Hans-Hermann Hoppe, among others, defense against aggression is produced privately, usually through some form of insurance. Since insurance companies would be competing against each other for customers, they would all have a powerful incentive to keep costs as low as possible while still providing the desired service.

It is unlikely that very many people, when asked to pay for it out of their own pockets, would choose to spend the kind of money that is necessary to support large-scale acts of military aggression against other countries or populations.

2. Liability for aggression is also expensive.

Likewise, in a system of privately provided defense, providers would be legally accountable for the consequences of their actions. There would be no single entity granted a monopoly of force, and thereby immunity from the legal consequences ordinary people must face.

What this means is that acts of aggression now become doubly expensive: a government, spending money it has taken by force, is shielded from legal action by its unique status, and thus need not worry much about economizing. Companies competing with each other for honest business do not have this luxury.

Private companies have neither a virtually unlimited stream of forced revenue nor immunity from prosecution for their acts of aggression. The cost of engaging in such acts, when competing with companies that do not engage in them, would likely be prohibitive. Any insurance/defense companies that took an aggressive military approach would quickly go out of business.

3. What does this mean for bioweapons and related research?

Defenders of research into deadly pathogens will argue that this type of work has legitimate purposes beyond the development of bioweapons, and of course they are correct. However, what they cannot demonstrate is that such research is “worth” the investment it requires.

Why not? Because they have no standard by which to evaluate their claim.

The key question here is: Worth it to whom? It is indeed possible that the research currently being conducted into deadly pathogens is “worth it” for those who made the decision to fund it with other people’s money. But all we can say with any certainty is that these people valued putting other people’s money into bioweapons research more than they valued other projects to which they might have allocated it. They most certainly did not value it enough to put up their own money.

More to the point: The people whose money was used for this venture had absolutely no say in the matter. The fact that the money was spent in this way tells us nothing at all about their preferences, and therefore, nothing at all about the value such projects have for society.

In a marketplace based on coercion, there is no way to know what the best uses for resources are; no way to know how much one investment is valued by society over another investment.

What might things look like in a society where nobody had this kind of coercive power? What might this kind of research look like in a society where people must spend their own money for the things that they want?

Given the high costs of aggressive behavior in such a society, it is more than likely that the production of bioweapons, and indeed, any research into dangerous pathogens, would be much more of a rarity than in our current society. We cannot say for certain that they would not exist at all, but in a world in which individuals decide for themselves how their resources are allocated, and in which individuals are held accountable for their own actions, we can be certain that such research, and such weapons, would be much less likely to arise.

...which is why the paper is coming under serious attack. We talk about that too.

I am reposting it here, because this snapshot is part of an important history. It’s a history we are still living through, but a great many are unaware of how long it has been going on (long before 2019, BTW), and of the incredible effort, time, energy and tears that so many have poured into what for so many years seemed like a hopeless battle.

Now, only six years later, the battleground has shifted in a seismic way. You may think—as I do—that it has not shifted nearly enough. But back in 2019, nobody would have imagined that Bobby Jr. would be in charge of the HHS. Nor that anything at all like this would ever be utterred in a White House press conference. Yes, there is still a long way to go, and no, foundational solutions are unlikely to come from any central authrity. But what is happening now is an undeniable sign that public sentiment has shifted, in a big way, and that we now live in a world that would be unrecognizable to the medical-freedom warriors of 2019.

In states across the country (and in other countries too), there is a concerted effort to strip away our rights to make our own medical decisions, and decisions for our children. Earlier this week, this effort manifested itself in the House and Health Insurance Committee hearings on HB19-1312 in Colorado. I remember watching similar hearings in California, for SB277, which removed parents' rights to decline vaccination for school entry based on religious or philosophical grounds – and the parallels here are eerie. It is really as if we are watching the same script being re-enacted over and over again:

Hundreds of parents of vaccine-injured children show up to testify against a bill that will take away their right to make medical decisions for their own families, there are hours and hours of this testimony, all of which goes completely ignored by the legislators who have already decided how they are going to vote.

I am posting here some excerpts from an account written by a doctor who attended the Colorado hearings. It is well worth reading in its entirety (see especially her comments about the woman typing next to her), and paints a vivid picture of the nature of the system that is taking away our most basic rights:

This was my first time attending a legislative committee hearing and boy did I pick a doozy. The bill being heard was Colorado HB 1312, which essentially plans to treat vaccine injured families who now want to decline even one shot, as ignorant criminals that need to be entered into a registry and tracked, forced into in-person meetings with state bureaucrats to be “educated” and forced into compelled speech by signing a form stating they are harming their child. People who decline one or more of of the 72 required doses, would have their private medical information revealed to the state but those who accept all 72 doses get to keep their medical information private. It also wipes out 99% of medical exemptions, replacing the doctor’s authority for the state’s. It doubles the number of required vaccines and also applies to homeschooled children. This bill is a big stinking pile of garbage.

The hearing room was small, holding about a hundred seats. One thousand parents showed up in opposition, packing the halls, rooms and walkways, with kids in tow, many disabled and vaccine injured. They were there hours ahead of time to stand in line for a seat in the hearing room. Hundreds of parents signed up to testify. The establishment made sure the people (peasants?) knew their place as most of the chairs were tied off and reserved for lobbyists, vaccine researchers and medical types. Those elites also had their parking and food provided. They showed up late, waltzed in right past the lines of defiant families and left after giving their testimony. Only about 20 parents were allowed in the hearing room initially. The rest were ushered to different parts of the building and gathered in groups around their phones to listen to the proceedings. The chair announced that she would call panels of 4, each person would get 2 minutes to speak, followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. I calculated that this format would be 42 hours of testimony just for opposition. Clearly many of us would not be heard today.

As the hours drew on, people had to leave to attend to their kids or work the next day. I stayed until the bitter end. I finally moved into the hearing room around 7 pm and testimonies lasted until 3:30 am. There were about 30 testimonials for the bill. The proponents said the same old bumper sticker slogans, “safe and effective”, “one in a million”, “vaccines don't cause ____”. The words “pseudoscience” and “conspiracy theories” were used more than once while ignoring all the injured families around them.

There were a few non-establishment people that spoke for their side. One was a family who told a heartbreaking story of losing a child to bacterial meningitis, the other an older man who was a polio survivor and the third was a mother whose child had a kidney condition and “could not receive the MMR”, so felt it was important that everyone else get it to protect her.

I choked up listening to the family describe losing their child to meningitis and wished that had not happened. But I also knew that vaccinating millions with our current vaccine would not be the answer. I wondered if they knew that meningococcal meningitis is very rare, with an average of 400 cases out of 325 million and that with treatment the survival rate is 90%. I wondered if they knew that the vaccine for meningitis only gives temporary protection and if given to a million Colorado children, 10,000 of them would suffer severe injury and at least 30 would die?

I wondered if the polio survivor knew that back when he had paralytic polio (which only happens 1% of the time), the treatments of immobilization and casting ensured a permanent paralysis and we now know that proper physical therapy would have helped many of those children completely recover? I wondered if he knew that this bill doesn't affect the polio vaccine but rather adds dozens of doses of newer, controversial, unsafe, unneeded or ineffective vaccines to the already bloated schedule?

The third case was particularly ironic, b/c this bill does not recognize her daughter’s condition as one that would qualify for a medical exemption, so if it passes, the medical exemption that she has enjoyed would vanish. So essentially she was testifying against herself and her daughter’s interests. Even more ironically, the people she was implying were a threat to her, were actually defending her daughter’s right to obtain a medical exemption based on her doctor’s judgement and defending her medical privacy.

Besides the few cases above, all the other testimonies in favor of the bill were from the medical establishment—pharmacists, nurses, pediatricians, infectious disease doctors, public health officers and Pharma funded researchers/scientists.

Approximately 150 spoke in opposition. There were 4 Chiropractors, 1 Acupuncturist, 2 “Vaccine Risk Aware” MD’s (including me), a representative from NVIC, Del Bigtree, and the rest were vaccine injured families, although many of the parents were also highly educated professionals, such as nurses, nurse practitioners, PhD’s etc. The testimonies of vaccine injury were powerful and heartbreaking. Even more heartbreaking was that these stories of grief, devastation, seizures, regression, disability and death did not touch the 7 Democratic legislators’ stone cold hearts. They were silent, dismissive or combative. A few of them dozed off during the testimony. Much of the time they appeared distracted by whatever was on their phones/laptops. The bill’s main sponsor would come and go a lot and missed much of the testimony, instead choosing to congregate with lobbyists in the hall. The 4 Republican legislators were attentive, listening and clearly touched by the stories. They asked excellent questions of both sides. The contrast between the 2 parties was stark and noticeable to all.

There were 3 exchanges with the Democratic legislators that took my breath away.

The first was from a pediatrician/representative who assailed a vaccine injured mother for speaking about MTHFR mutation. She implied that the mom must be confused or lying b/c she “knew” and stated unequivocally “that anyone who had double MTHFR mutation would have homocystinuria, which is screened for at birth!” She was very confident in her ignorance and could not be swayed. I so wished I had been up there to defend this mom and to let the other legislators know that pediatricians and allopaths in general do not study, utilize or understand epigenetics, detoxification or vaccine injury related to those factors and that their colleague was gravely misinformed. I and many others in that room have homozygous MTHFR mutation and can assure you we don't have the diagnosis of homocystinuria.

For those that are curious, homocystinuria is an amino acid disorder that can be caused by many genetic polymorphisms, most commonly the CBS mutation. These newborns are screened for this disorder by measuring levels of amino acids and do not receive genetic snp testing. So children having the MTHFR mutation, which may predispose them to vaccine injury, would not know that before injections started.

MTHFR and other single nucleotide polymorphisms are not a genetic disorder like Down’s syndrome where everyone with that gene manifests with the same unalterable condition. These snp's can turn on and off based on environmental factors and have many different manifestations, such as early heart disease, autoimmune disorders and intolerance to medications. Once again, pediatricians know very little about this and thus the hostile arrogance she demonstrated while shutting this informed mother down was shocking and quite symbolic of our bigger problems.

The second exchange was between an African American legislator who seemed not to care at all when presented with information that the CDC had committed scientific fraud around a study looking at autism in African American boys. Her very polite answer was “my nephew is high up in the CDC so I have all the information I need from him, but thanks anyway”. Wow.

The third comment was heartfelt and by a legislator who has a grandchild with autism. She stated that the child was different even before his 2 month shots and she knew that his autism was “just how he was and not a vaccine injury”. I wondered if she knew 4 vaccines are given in every pregnancy, hep B is given a few hours after birth and that the HepB vaccine at birth has a higher correlation to autism than tobacco does to lung cancer?

She went on to say that she found it very hurtful that anyone would suggest that vaccines cause autism because that wasn’t the case for her grandson. Yet she couldn't see that denying the experience of hundreds in the room who had watched their children regress after vaccines was just as hurtful. What she didn't seem to realize is not all autism is the same and assuming he was unvaccinated before 2 months old, both scenarios could be true. It is wrong to deny one version of reality while clinging to another, especially when the one chosen as valid lets Pharma and the CDC off the hook and throws hundreds of thousand of families under the bus.

The biggest outrage and wake up call for me, came at the very end of the hearing. The sergeant directs the seating in the hearing room and I was seated next to a woman who I didn’t know, but I assumed was a lobbyist and maybe even the bill’s author. I was annoyed by her constant typing on her computer, jumping up from her seat to gather with lobbyists and being completely oblivious and unconcerned with the heartfelt testimonies being shared, even rolling her eyes when people spoke about toxins.

Her incessant typing involved writing numerous legislators with talking points and followups, reinforcing the legislation and refuting points made by the opposition. I also saw a more formal email that she worked on for quite a while addressed to the bill’s sponsor. She was typing furiously on it, ignoring the father who was crying, describing the death of his infant. I watched her to see if she would even look up, but she just tic-tacked away, cold as ice. Her lack of humanity was disturbing and it saddened me. The email looked like a speech and I thought maybe it was for the next reading of the bill or an interview. But what do you know, as the sponsor began his closing remarks, it was word for word what I had watched her type just hours before.

I admit that I was naive and inexperienced as to how things work in the capitol but it made me sick to my stomach to watch someone so disrespectful and oblivious be able to “speak” through a puppet legislator, while everyone else clearly assumed his words were his own. It also really drove home for me what a David and Goliath fight this is, how it truly is a war by Pharma (with the help of media and legislators) against these already beleaguered families, their providers and the population as a whole.

I don’t have the language to describe the disgust, betrayal and fury I felt, as a life long Democrat, watching my party’s legislators, still vote down all reasonable amendments and pass this bill out of committee, despite 13+ hours of compelling testimony. They are on the wrong side of history. They heard the stories of injury, death and disability and just truly didn’t care. They heard the facts about corruption and scientific misconduct at the CDC and just truly didn’t care. It was clear that they witnessed the weird disconnect of doctors saying “this can’t happen”, while surrounded by hundreds of people saying “it happened to me”. Once again, they just didn’t care. Because you know, measles.

The same legislators who would lecture the Right about body autonomy and personal choice in reproductive matters clearly don't apply those values here. The party who says they care about underrepresented and misunderstood minority groups clearly make an exception here. The party that would never tolerate the tracking and registry of Muslims are fine doing it to this minority group. The party that rejects the industry funded junk science questioning climate change and embraces independent researchers sounding the alarms, to explain what we can see with our own eyes, here cannot see that they are doing the opposite—whole heartedly swallowing industry funded junk science to prop up the “more vaccines the better” and the “nothing to see here” mantras and rejecting the independent scientists who are sounding the alarms, to explain the exploding rates of chronic disease that we all see with our own eyes.

My heart breaks for my party. My heart breaks for Colorado and the other states fighting similar battles. But most of all my heart breaks for the children who will be sickened, injured or killed by a vaccine program that has gone off the rails and then dismissed and bullied by our institutions, leaving their parents to pick up the pieces. There is no such thing as an “anti-vaxxer” or a “pro-vaxxer”, that is an industry narrative that generates fear, distraction and sells more products. The only labels we should be worried about is state control vs. parental control. These parents could have been any one of us. They trusted but were harmed and then betrayed by a corrupt, unaccountable, industry-captured medical system. They are mama and papa bears who are fighting for their own children, your children and society as a whole. Wake up. Fight back. Join your local efforts in defending medical freedom, body autonomy and the right to decline pharmaceutical products before it is too late. And if you are the praying type, it’s time to pray hard.

I am still processing my trip to Polyface, for the Brownstone Institute’s “Reclaim Your Independence” retreat. I’ve been going through my notes, and there will be lots to write about! As of today, two of the talks are posted on the retreat’s site, and I believe the rest will make their way there too.

Quite apart from the talks though—and they were all fantastic and inspiring—on a personal level there was just something utterly magical about it all. The space, the company, the food… Something about being there for those two days, and with this particular group of (also magical, inspired, and fearless) people has left me flying through each day with more energy than I ever knew I had. Any time I gather with like-minded (and like-spirited) folks, I always come back recharged and feeling good about the world. But this was different. This was an order of magnitude different. And I’m not sure why.

Maybe it was the setting:

Joel Salatin’s beautiful regenerative farm, about which I have heard so much for so many years, but had never visited until now. Let me just tell you: It is a magical space. It is clean, orderly, beautiful… I have always felt that there is a “spirit” to physical spaces, that each space has its own energy and that there is something spiritual about that energy. I’ve come away from my visit to Polyface believing that that energy can be cultivated and encouraged, and that that is what Joel and his family, and team, have done. If what I’m saying sounds weird and woo-woo, all I can say is: Go and visit it yourself, and you’ll experience what I mean.

When I was a little girl, my fantasy was to live on a farm and have a horse. Or probably lots of horses. I had an idea in my head of a farm as being something beautiful and pleasant to be in. I’ve visited many farms over the years, and a few have indeed been beautiful and pleasant. But most of my memories of farms include large stinking piles of cow dung and foul smells everywhere. There was none of that at Polyface—and there are reasons for that, which I will be writing about.

Maybe it was the company?

I rode up with four dear friends and liberty activists from Kentucky, and we shared an Airbnb together. Getting to spend time with them was great fun, as was seeing some people I already knew (although in a few cases it was our first time meeting in person), and meeting some new ones.

I’ll just say this: Being around people who are not ruled by fear, who are working in whatever little corner of the whole world of things that need to be worked on, and who have a real love for humanity, who believe deeply in human liberty… is uplifting. It is energizing.

Or maybe it’s the oatmeal?

I eat pretty low-carb. I don’t usually have grains, or sugar. But on a trip like this, or when something extraordinary is put in front of me, I’ll make exceptions. This is one exception that is going to stay with me:

This is the baked oatmeal that was served for breakfast each day at Polyface. And it is one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted. I’ve started making it at home, and I imagine we’ll be eating this for a long time to come.

Here is the recipe:

Baked Oatmeal II

Breakfast

Prep Time: 10 m Cook Time: 40 m Servings: 8 Source: allrecipes.com

Ingredients

3 cups rolled oats

1 cup brown sugar (I substituted coconut sugar in one batch, and allulose in another. both worked well.)

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

2 eggs

1/2 cup melted butter

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3/4 cup dried cranberries (we used raisins.)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a large bowl, mix together oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. Beat in

milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir in dried cranberries. Spread into a 9x13

inch baking dish.

Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes

The oats were donated by retreat participant, Scott Below, of FactoryFreeOats. I do think the oats make a difference—I’ve ordered them, and used them in my most recent batches. Highly recommend.

So I don’t know. I don’t have a definitive answer for why I am feeling so great after this trip. Since returning, I’ve been getting up early every morning—something I haven’t done regularly since high school. So maybe that’s it. Or maybe it’s just a combination of all of the above.

But a few things are clear: 1) Being around folks who are steeped in positive energy, whose life-force is strong, and who have no time for fear, is a powerful, powerful thing. Don’t imagine that all of that stuff doesn’t rub off on anyone who is around them; 2) Being in nature is important. Being in the sun, being among trees and plants and, yes, cows and chickens, is something we are meant to be doing. It’s good for us; 3) This is one I’ve resisted for many years, but I think getting up in the morning is important, and energizing. And I’m going to stick with it.

That’s it for now. I’ll be writing more about the specifics of how Polyface operates, and about some of the other wonderful talks we heard there. And really, do try the oatmeal.

“Everything I am, I owe this place!”

These words, uttered in a plaintive cry by Jimmy Lai in the trailer for The Hong Konger, struck me and resonated deep inside. I know exactly what he means. While I am no business or media mogul, everything I am today—professionally, personally, spiritually—was forged in the anything-goes, free-wheeling wild west of a Hong Kong that once was.

Lai, a longtime outspoken critic of the Chinese government and founder of Next Media and Apple Daily (now defunct), is currently in prison in Hong Kong, charged under the controversial National Security Law that was enacted in 2020.

I first met Jimmy Lai in 1991, when I interviewed him for a local business magazine. I got to know him better a few years later, when I was with the editorial page of the Asian Wall Street Journal. I was impressed with him from the beginning because he was such a contrast to the typical Hong Konger. Back then, the people of Hong Kong prided themselves on being “very practical people.” It was the number one refrain used by locals to describe themselves.

What did it mean? Essentially, that they had no time for philosophy, principle, or deep thinking of any kind. The bottom line was about as far as their interests flowed. And one could hardly blame them. The vast majority had either fled, or been born to those who had fled, a brutal communist dictatorship in which the best one could hope for was mere survival.

Jimmy Lai fled that dictatorship too, at the age of twelve. But somehow, he was different. Somehow, his interests extended beyond mere survival, or even economic success and wealth. A single conversation with him was enough to see that he was unusually thoughtful and deeply interested in the big questions presented by life—a rarity in that place at that time.

I had come to Hong Kong after leaving college, to learn to be a journalist. I learned the hard way: by doing it and making a million mistakes along the way. And that’s kind of how Hong Kong worked: Folks just got it into their head to do something and then went out and did it. There was very little in the way of regulation, certification, or red tape, and there was a flat, low tax for those who made enough to pay any tax at all. Businesses sank or swam depending on how happy they made their customers. The enclave was hailed as the freest economy in the world, year after year.

The success of this “letting people do what they want with what is theirs” model spoke for itself: In the space of only ten years—between 1966 and 1976—real per-capita income grew by 5.7% annually, bringing the territory up from levels comparable to Mexico and Argentina into the ranks of the wealthiest countries on earth.

One of the indicators that has always impressed me is the number of businesses per capita. That number is currently around 200 per 1,000 residents—twice the number for the US and nearly ten times the number for New York City.

But some of Hong Kong’s most impressive successes are harder to quantify. Prior to the handover to the Chinese government, the colony had very few public welfare provisions. And yet, by any of the typical indicators, poverty there was no more of a problem than for any American city.

But the real story goes beyond what the numbers can tell: The kind of poverty that is common in the United States simply did not exist in Hong Kong. There were no ghettoes where children grew up surrounded by despair and violence—where the only opportunities for improvement were to be found in selling drugs or joining criminal gangs. Multiple generations might squeeze themselves into tiny public-housing flats, but the adults worked hard to earn a living and to make sure their children were educated and had promising futures. The whole inter-generational poverty trap, and the mentality of hopelessness that goes with it, was just not a part of Hong Kong society.

With some irony, all of this existed not because of “practically minded” leadership but because of the principled mindset of one man, Sir John Cowperthwaite, Hong Kong’s financial secretary from 1961 to 1971. During a period of tremendous international pressure and tumult for the colony, Cowperthwaite held to his principles of non-intervention in the economy and free trade with the outside world. The result was a safe haven for millions fleeing the brutality and privation of a centrally planned economy and an economic powerhouse to rival entire nations.

After having witnessed the workings of the freest economy on earth up close, after having lived in it, I’ve lost patience with those who are convinced that the massive structure of government intervention here in the US is somehow necessary or justified. It’s just hard to engage seriously with arguments that try to tell me that what I’ve seen with my own eyes is impossible, or that it is somehow detrimental to society.

Even in Hong Kong, it was hard to find people who appreciated the value of the ideas that were the foundation for the unique environment that they, their parents, or their grandparents risked so much to be a part of. The average Hong Konger always seemed to be far too busy making money to care about the ideas of liberty.

But Jimmy Lai cared. And still does. He understands those ideas and cares deeply about them. Unlike so many others in the territory, he appreciates that everything he has accomplished, everything he has built for himself, his family, and his community, is thanks to the ideas of individual liberty, made real in the firmament of that city.

When the government of China took back control of Hong Kong in 1997, it had its own ideas about how the city should operate: After witnessing the results of several decades of strictly socialist economics, the Communist leadership of China recognized that adhering to these collectivist principles would (and did) starve the country. They implemented economic reforms, freeing people up to feed themselves, to buy and sell, and ultimately to become prosperous—but not to speak freely or do anything that might be perceived as a threat to the government. The CCP would love to impose this model on Hong Kong, and that is indeed what they have aimed for since before the handover.

But Hong Kong’s magic did not come from the dreams of collectivist dictators. And it was never just a place where people could prosper. It was a place where they could pursue their dreams, where they could speak their minds, where a person could become anything they wanted to so long as they worked hard enough. Where a person could become Jimmy Lai.

What the Chinese leadership fails to understand—and probably wouldn’t care about if they did—is that Hong Kong is not only an engine of prosperity. It is not just a machine that produces wealth “for the good of the nation.” It is a society founded on individual freedom, and because of this foundation, it has not only flourished but become an expression of millions of hopes and dreams. What the Chinese government and the government of Hong Kong fail to recognize is that when they cage Jimmy Lai, they cage the spirit of Hong Kong itself.

“Faithful readers will remember my blog from last week titled "Time to Stand" regarding state action against Triple Oaks Farm in Campbell County, Virginia regarding their Private Membership Association (PMA) designation.

“Bryson Lipscomb called me yesterday to inform me that the state has withdrawn the suit in its entirety. No courthouse showdown Monday, Sept. 22. It's all done.

“Apparently this blog and other efforts generated enough attention and heat that the Virginia Department of Health backed off and has decided to not pursue penetrating their PMA model. This is a fabulous win on our side and we can all thank God for cooler heads to prevail.”

For anyone not familiar with the Private Membership Association model, it is a way for people to create, engage, and exchange with each other without being under the jurisdiction of government regulatory bodies. It is one way in which we can escape the ever-encroaching grasp of those bodies, and thrive.

As an aside, the state does not want us to thrive. Most importantly, it does not want us to be able to thrive independently. If you believe that those regulatory agencies and their rules exist to keep anyone safe, I encourage you to look a little deeper. And to remember that long before those agencies existed, there was a justice system that enabled people to take action against anyone whose product or service caused them harm.

I believe that it is no accident AT ALL that today, in our heavily regulated society, we now have companies and individuals that are free to cause the gravest of harm to the people who use their products and/or services, without fear of any legal consequences. Without fear of being held accountable for their actions.

Why? Because the regulatory state does not protect us. It protects the interests of certain, already-powerful businesses, by making it harder for anyone else to compete with them. That’s it. That’s what regulation actually does, in contrast to what your junior-high school civics teacher told you it does.

In any case, the Lipscombs’ case is a huge victory for all of us. It reaffirms our right—at least in part—to trade with each other as consenting adults, and frees up just a little corner of our lives in which we might thrive.

What makes this outcome all the more impressive, and meaningful for the rest of us, is that the Lipscombs were going to be representing themselves in court, as no attorney would take their case.

As Joel writes:

“No attorney will represent them because lawyers can lose their licenses to practice if they dare to defend PMAs. The Lipscombs will be representing themselves pro se…”

I would like to extend my most heartfelt appreciation to the Lipscombs for standing up to the Virginia Department of Health, and for doing so when they had no professional legal assistance, and certainly no guarantee of success. I also want to thank Joel Salatin for raising awareness of the case, and everyone who came out in support of the Lipscombs. As Joel says, it was very likely that it was this pressure that caused the department to back down. This victory does not only help the Lipscombs, it helps every single one of us who wishes to operate in freedom, to create, and to trade with one another as we choose. And to thrive.
